Every parent wants a cavity-free smile for their child. You remind them to brush, cut back on sugary snacks, and book regular checkups. Still, cavities can sneak in, especially on the back teeth. That is where dental sealants come in. They are quick, painless, and one of the easiest ways to protect your child’s teeth. Here is what you need to know.
What Are Dental Sealants?
A dental sealant is a thin plastic coating painted onto the chewing surface of a tooth. Your child’s back teeth, called molars, have deep grooves and tiny pits.
Food and bacteria get trapped in them, and a toothbrush often can’t reach all the way in. A sealant fills those grooves and creates a smooth surface that is much easier to keep clean.
Why Do Kids Need Sealants?
Children are still learning how to brush well, and molars are hard to clean. Most childhood cavities start on those rough chewing surfaces. Sealants help block them.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that school-age children without sealants get nearly three times as many cavities as children with them. Sealants prevent about 80 percent of cavities in the first two years after they are placed. They keep protecting about half of the teeth for up to four more years.
When Is the Best Time to Get Sealants?
The best time is soon after the molars come in, before decay has a chance to start. For most children, that means two stages:
- First permanent molars: these arrive around age 6.
- Second permanent molars: these arrive between ages 11 and 14.
Sometimes baby teeth with deep grooves are sealed too. Your dentist can tell you what makes sense for your child.
What to Expect During the Visit
Getting sealants is simple. There is no drilling and no needle, and it is usually done in a single visit. The steps are:
- The tooth is cleaned and dried.
- A mild solution is applied to roughen the surface slightly, so the sealant can bond well.
- The tooth is rinsed and dried again.
- The sealant is painted on and hardened with a special light.
Most children find it easy, and it can be a great first step for kids who feel nervous about the dentist.
How Long Do Sealants Last?
Sealants can last up to about nine years, but they do wear down over time. Chewing, teeth grinding, and hard or sticky foods can chip them. That is why we check them at regular exams and repair or replace them when needed. A sealant that has come loose can’t protect the tooth, so keeping up with checkups matters.
Do Sealants Replace Brushing?
No. Sealants only cover the chewing surfaces. The smooth sides of the teeth and the spaces between them still need care. Your child should keep brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing, and getting fluoride treatments when recommended. A balanced diet with fewer sugary drinks and snacks helps too. Think of sealants as one strong layer of protection, not the whole plan.
Are Sealants Safe and Affordable?
Sealants have been used for more than 40 years and are widely considered safe. They also cost much less than treating a cavity later, and they spare your child the discomfort of a filling. At Bayside Dental Group and Orthodontics, we accept most PPO plans, Medicaid, and Texas CHIP. We also offer financing options. Call us to check your coverage.
Protect Your Child’s Smile Today
