What Dental Problems Can Invisalign® Fix?

If your smile does not sit quite the way you want it to, the concern often goes beyond appearance. Crowded or misaligned teeth create spots that are harder to clean, and over time, this can wear your enamel unevenly or strain your jaw.

Invisalign® gives you an alternative to metal brackets and wires. You wear a series of clear, custom-fitted aligners, switching to a new set roughly every two weeks as your teeth gradually shift toward a healthier position.

Crowded Teeth

Overlapping, twisted, or angled teeth can develop when there is not enough space for the teeth to align properly. Other factors can also contribute to dental crowding. Invisalign® may help gradually reposition crowded teeth and improve their alignment when the case is appropriate for clear aligner treatment.

Gaps Between Teeth

A space between your two front teeth rarely causes health problems, but you might still want it closed for a more even smile. Food can collect more easily in these spaces, which sometimes irritates your gums. Aligners close the space over time, moving each tooth a small distance at a time.

Overbite

Look in the mirror with your jaw closed. If your upper teeth extend well past your lower ones, that overlap is likely an overbite. A slight overlap is normal, but a more pronounced one can put uneven pressure on your front teeth, and in some cases, your lower teeth touch the gum tissue behind the upper row.

Invisalign® can correct some overbites by gradually repositioning the teeth and improving the relationship between the upper and lower dental arches. The appropriate approach depends on the cause and severity of the overbite.

Underbite

An underbite works in the opposite direction. Your lower jaw sits ahead of your upper one, so your bottom front teeth land in front of the top teeth instead of behind them. The effects often show up in daily habits rather than in how your smile looks.c

Certain foods can become harder to chew, and your speech can shift slightly depending on how far out of position your jaw sits. Mild underbites often respond well to Invisalign®, though a larger jaw discrepancy may need a broader evaluation before aligners alone can help.

Crossbite

Unlike the other two, a crossbite will not always involve your whole mouth. It might affect just one tooth, a handful of teeth, or an entire side of your bite, with upper teeth sitting inside the lower row instead of outside it.

Left untreated, the affected teeth can wear unevenly, and your jaw joint can grow sore from the added strain of the misalignment. Invisalign® may be appropriate for some dental crossbites, particularly when the problem is related primarily to tooth position. More complex or skeletal crossbites may require other orthodontic treatments or a broader evaluation.

Open Bite

Even with your jaw fully closed, an open bite leaves the front teeth without contact, and that small gap can affect more than you might expect. Biting into food takes more effort than it should, and certain sounds may change slightly when you talk.

Aligners can close that space step by step, though a more pronounced case may require different treatment alongside Invisalign®, or in place of it.

Mildly Crooked or Misaligned Teeth

If just one of your teeth sits slightly out of line with its neighbors, you might not pay attention to it until you see it clearly in a photograph. Invisalign® works well for shifts like this, adjusting only the tooth or two that need it.

When Is Invisalign® Not the Right Treatment?

Invisalign® is not suitable for every orthodontic problem. Some severe tooth-position problems or significant jaw discrepancies may require traditional braces, additional orthodontic appliances, or surgical treatment, depending on the underlying cause.

Rotation is another limit worth knowing about. Some tooth movements, including significant rotations or other complex movements, may be more difficult to achieve predictably with aligners alone.

You need to wear your aligners for the recommended hours each day, or you may not see the results you are hoping for. A dental provider can look at your specific case and recommend what will work best for you.
